Make no mistake though, they really, really suck the fun out of an otherwise great spin on the classic “Xcom” tactics genre. I have yet to do so, seeing as I’m at the end of the game and I’m looking to push through. I think if you set it on easy or very easy for those missions it might make them faster and simpler to get through. I want to end with that I do like the game, but the modifiers interrupt the game so much I just kept shaking my head in pure frustration. Either they change something trivial (best case scenario), or they make a simple side-mission near impossible and only feasible with ultra-cheese methods. It is rare that a modifier mission is anything but pointless. They serve only as exercises in breaking, manipulating or cheesing your way through a level. Eventually you will encounter missions in your rotation that just plain suck. The sad part is that you have no choice in the matter. Leading many missions with modifiers to constant reloads, resets and wearing efforts in manipulating the AI to score a cheap win because that is the only way to do it. Instead, they serve to nerf your team way too much inhibiting any fun and freedom that lays at the base of any good tactics game.
The modifiers offer very little in terms of engaging game-play. However, the modifiers make such a huge chuck of the game a painful chore to play. Like I stated above, the normal game is a blast and playing on hard is a pretty good spot for me. It can be things like, less action points, more enemy damage and such aspects. This means the random non-scripted missions will have modifiers. However, the game gets into this “modifier” meta-game later on as you progress.
